Welcome to my website and blog, Cornerstone of Life / Healthy Lifestyle for Mature Adults.  I think it is important to tell a story, provide some information about Dennis Shollenburg , my journey and why this website and blog are an important mission in my life and why I believe it is important to you and your family.

The Story: At the end of 1999, I retired after a 30 year career in commercial banking, leaving a position as President and CEO of a Community Bank.  There were several reasons, the primary ones being health related issues.  Now that I have taken a look back, I can see that I abused my body from a nutritional and lifestyle point of view.  I was a sugar and junk food addict.  I lived on processed foods, fast foods, red meat and dairy products and disliked most vegetables.  I was 45 to 50 pounds overweight, sedentary, taking 8 to 10 prescription medications.  My body was not functioning properly and I felt like I was setting myself up for some major medical problems.  Each year, during my annual physical, my doctor would look at the lab results, check me over and tell me I should lose a little weight, that there were a couple of things in the lab work that were not quite right.  We would discuss any problem I was having and I would leave with another prescription medication.  During this point in my life I was extremely busy and did not have time to concern myself about my health.  The “Doctor” knew best and had the training and education so I just took the pills and got on with my life.  Below is a short list of the medications.

-high blood pressure medication since mid 30’s
-allergy medication most of adult life
-cholesterol medication since early 30/s
-stomach GERD medication since early 40’s
-diabetic medication since mid 40’s
-sleeping medication since early 50’s
-diarrhea medication since early 50’s
-restless legs syndrome medication since early 50’
-antibiotics 2-3 times a year

Several times certain medications had to be changed because they were causing problems with my liver, side effects of the medication.

I finally woke up and realized something was wrong with this picture. I truly believed I had to change my complete lifestyle and everything I knew about personal health.  I could not count on my doctors for assistance.  Remember this had been going on for 15-20 years.

As we continue this story there is a part of my life at the end of my banking career of which I am not proud. I made the big mistake of becoming involved in the tax protest movement and spent several years actively fighting the Government and the IRS regarding the Constitutional legality of our tax system.  I was wrong, and in 2006, I pled guilty to one count of tax conspiracy and was sentenced to 37 months in a Federal Correctional Camp in Taft, California.  This is certainly something I am not proud of, but through the Grace of GOD, I was given the opportunity to forgive myself for what I had done to my family and friends, plus I was given the opportunity to change and recreate my life.  While incarcerated I went back to school and received a degree in Comprehensive Nutrition  from Huntington College of Health Sciences.  I studied several aspects of natural body work such as Accupressure, Reflexology and Massage therapy.  I researched and read several hundred articles about Alternative complimentary medicine {natural medicine}.  I was also the instructor at the camp for a course in “The Science and Art of Herbology” by Rosemary Gladstar.

How did I change my life? During the five year period before I was incarcerated I found a young Doctor from the Veteran’s Administration who was willing to work with me using some natural therapies and lifestyle changes such as diet and nutrition, exercise, vitamins and minerals and a positive outlook and approach to life.  I knew what to do but was it easy?  NOOOO!  It was the hardest undertaking I ever attempted in my life, but I truly believed my life depended on the results.  It took me awhile but I finally learned what good nourishing food was and how important it was to your body.  The changes in my life were gradual, they did not happen overnight, but through monitoring by my doctor and countless hours of research and reading, especially in the areas of nutrition, natural herbs and supplements, I could see the changes in my physical and mental life.  It took four years for me to get off all of my medications except the one pill I take for diabetes and I am positive I will be off that medication very soon.  I have lost over 40 pounds and have no trouble keeping my weight at 180. Today, at 65 I feel alive and healthy and younger than I did at 50 years old.  If some of the things you are reading today sound familiar in your life, I want you to know there is a process and a method that will change and restore your life.  It is not a miracle cure, it does not cost $19.95, it is hard work and it is rewarding and fun.

During 2004-2006, I was employed part-time at a large organic and natural food supermarket in Rancho Mirage, California.  While I was working on the sales floor I went through their training program and I assisted all ages of people with health issues.  People who were tired of prescribed medications and their side effects and were turning to natural health remedies.  I encountered many people between the ages of 55 and 80 who were on more medications than I was at one time in my life.  It is my firm belief that if a person does not take care of their body by providing proper vitamins and minerals through nutrition and supplements {natural}, at some point in their mid 50’s they will hit what I call the “proverbial wall” of poor health and wonder what is happening to them. Their doctors, who treat symptoms, will prescribe pharmaceutical medication.  I met one lady of age 77 that was on 19 medications and could not understand why she had all of these problems.  Just think of the potential side effects of the medications.

After reading the above you might think that I am against modern medicine and doctors. Our present system of medicine is called allopathic medicine and doctors are taught in school to treat certain symptoms with a prescribed medicine.  I have seen modern medical miracles.  In 1997 my wife was the recipient of a gift of a kidney that was transplanted into her body.  She is very healthy today because of the wonderful doctors, modern hospital, pharmaceutical anti-rejection drugs and the gift of life from a dear friend.  If I were in an accident and had broken bones and trauma or a birth or genetic defect, I would want the best doctors at my side.  All I am saying is that there are other avenues to optimum health especially for illnesses and progressive disease.
